During our trial of the Mosquito Alarm, we aimed to assess its effectiveness in deterring unauthorized individuals from specific areas. Initially, we deployed the device at a dumpster location where individuals frequently climbed inside. Our goal was to determine whether the Mosquito Alarm would be an effective deterrent for this type of activity. g around the dumpster area. We observed that while certain subjects chose to avoid the vicinity due to the alarm’s sound, others who were already intent on climbing into the dumpster were not significantly deterred. This indicated that while the device is useful in creating an unwelcoming environment for loitering, it may have limitations when individuals are highly motivated to access a particular area.
Following our observations at the dumpster location, we relocated the Mosquito Alarm to an area with more prevalent loitering concerns—near an employee entrance where individuals would often set up tents or boxes. This second trial provided more definitive results. The alarm appeared to be effective in discouraging people of various ages from lingering in the area. A significant reduction in the number of individuals setting up makeshift shelters was observed. Additionally, stairways, which were previously occupied for extended periods (including overnight stays), saw a noticeable decrease in long-term loitering. Individuals would sit momentarily but would leave within minutes, suggesting that the alarm successfully disrupted their usual behavior.
Overall, the results from both trials indicate that the Mosquito Alarm is an effective tool in reducing unwanted loitering and encampments, particularly in areas where individuals are not committed to entering a specific space. While it may not completely prevent determined individuals from accessing dumpsters, it does help in discouraging general loitering and reducing the presence of unauthorized individuals around employee areas. Based on these findings, we are optimistic about expanding the use of Mosquito Alarms to additional locations where similar concerns exist.
